The Greenbelt concept was originated by Boise civic and political leaders to protect the quality of and assure public access to the Boise River. Designed as a linear park for leisure and recreational use, the Greenbelt is enjoyed by Boiseans and the city's visitors of all ages. The path follows the banks of the Boise River from downtown, stretching through the Boise Valley from the Glenwood Bridge on the west to Lucky Peak State Park on the east. It incorporates approximately 25 miles of paved and unpaved pathway. Mile markers along the path are 1/2 mile apart and are numbered consecutively from the Base or Zero marker at the Capitol Boulevard Bridge.
The Greenbelt accommodates walkers, bikers, skaters, joggers, runners, wildlife observers and fishermen. As you stroll the Greenbelt, take time to enjoy any of the twelve parks connected by the path. Many offer picnic areas, playgrounds, open spaces for kite flying or impromptu football games and public restrooms. Bike rentals are available from Bikes 2 Boards (208-343-0208). In-line skates can be rented from Newt & Harold's Boards & Skates (208-385-9300). The path and parks are all wheelchair accessible.
A popular summertime activity in Boise is floating the river by inner tube, raft, kayak or canoe from Barber Park into the city. People of all ages can cool down while enjoying a few hours of total relaxation. Tubes and rafts can be rented seasonally at the put-in location, Barber Park (208-343-6564). Shuttle service between the put-in and take-out points is available for a small cost. Guided Boise River raft trips are available through Epley's - a great experience for those wishing to stay a bit drier (208-577-4584).
Wildlife lovers enjoy the Greenbelt year-round. Ducks, geese, great blue heron and many species of songbirds can be seen along the entire length of the path. The sight of bald eagles wintering along the river is an added treat for trail-users. For the practiced observer, beaver, grey fox and muskrat can also be seen.
